MoShang alias Jean Marais (2011)

MoShang is the stage name of Jean Marais, a South African downbeat musician and chillout producer who now lives in Taiwan .

Life

Jean Marais began his musical engagement in the early 1980s as a choir singer in Cape Town , South Africa . Marais had his first successes as a singer and front man of the South African art rock band Duusman (Afrikaans, dt. Dutch ) and as a saxophonist for the group Tsunami . He later produced three award-winning albums in honor of the poet Breyten Breytenbach . Together with Riku Lätti, Marais founded the Afrikaans pop duo 12 Hz . In 2003 they released the album Nou (Afrikaans, Eng . Now ) on Rhythm Records / Bowline. He received South Africa's prestigious Avanti Craft Award for his participation in the short film Angels in a Cage .

In 2003 Marais moved to the Taiwanese city of Taichung and released his first album Made in Taiwan under the Chinese stage name MoShang on the label Onse Plate (afrikaans, our record) . His second album Chill Dynasty followed in 2006. His music was selected for the Discovery HD production Fantastic Festivals Of The World . In 2009 he was the winner in the audio category of the Ubuntu 9.04 Free Culture Showcase. In 2009, as Jean Marais, he founded the project Eentonig (afrikaans, German monotonous ) together with Andre van Rensburg and Louis Minnaar and published an album of the same name and an illustrated book of the same name.

MoShang released his fourth long player Further East in 2010 on the German label Lemongrassmusic . He has published more than 100 episodes of his live online podcast. Each episode is an hour long and includes the live performance of his original music. During this time MoShang also composed the original score for the documentary Koxinga: A Hero's Legacy for the National Geographic channel for Asia. In 2012 his sixth album What Comes Around was released by Stone Bell Music.
