The modern variant is a variant of the Alekhine defense of the game of chess . It is marked by the 4th move by white and is listed under the ECO code B04.
Well over half of all games played with the Alekhine Defense now begin with this sequence of moves:
1. e2 – e4 Ng8 – f6 2. e4 – e5 Nf6 – d5 3. d2 – d4 d7 – d6 4. Ng1 – f3
The following lines are considered the most common sequels:
4.… Bc8 – g4 5. Bf1 – e2 e7 – e6 is the main line, whereby Black's white-squared bishop escapes a possible containment. In the further course 6. 0–0 Bf8 – e7 7. c2 – c4 Nd5 – b6 8. Nb1 – c3 0–0 9. Bc1 – e3 d6 – d5 10. c4 – c5 Bg4xf3 Efim Geller introduced 11. g2xf3, um to be able to exchange the attacked Nb6 on c4 and then win the pawn on c4.
4.… g7 – g6 ( Alburt variant) 5. Bf1 – c4 Nd5 – b6 6. Bc4 – b3 Bf8 – g7 7. 0–0 or more sharply 7. Nf3 – g5. A game with an original ending was won by Nigel Short. (See Nigel Short # lot )
4.… d6xe5 5. Nf3xe5 c7 – c6 with cover for the d5 knight is the sensible modification of the Kengis system 5.… g7 – g6 by Tony Miles . Bent Larsen introduced 5.… Nb8 – d7, which makes it possible to strike 6. Ne5xf7, which after 6.… Ke8xf7 7. Qd1 – h5 + Kf7 – e6 8. Qh5 – g4 + Ke6 – f7 9. Qg4 – h5 + Kf7 – e6 but only enough for permanent chess. An attempt was made to continue playing with 8. c4 or 8. g3.
4.… Nd5 – b6 ( Schmid variant)
4.… Nb8 – c6 enables because of 5. c2 – c4 Nd5 – b6 6. e5 – e6 f7xe6 (6.… Bc8xe6? Loses because of the pawn fork 7. d4 – d5) the promising Gambit variant.
The last continuation leads to a sharp Gambit variant, which, combined with an inhibition sacrifice , is intended to disturb the further development of the black position and usually leads to a very open black position. Analyzes by the German FIDE master Jürgen Haakert have proven the playability of this open and risky position for Black.
