Mogens Schou

Mogens Schou (born November 24, 1918 in Copenhagen ; † September 29, 2005 ) was a Danish psychiatrist and developer of lithium prophylaxis ( lithium therapy ) for affective psychoses.

After the Australian psychiatrist John Cade had already reported on an anti-manic effect of lithium in 1949, Schou propagated a phase prophylactic effect of lithium in affective psychoses from 1967 onwards . Long-term use of lithium medication is intended to prevent relapse into depression or mania .

The effectiveness of lithium prophylaxis was controversial from the start. Some researchers celebrate it as the greatest advance in psychiatric drug therapy. Others believe that it was mainly Mogens Schou's great personal commitment that led to its spread.

Schou received the Anna Monika Prize in 1968 , the Paul Martini Prize in 1969 and the Albert Lasker Award for Clinical Medical Research in 1987 .
