Mohale's Hoek is the capital of the Mohale's Hoek district in Lesotho . It is located around 110 kilometers south of the capital Maseru . In 2016, the city had 40,040 inhabitants, making it the third largest city in the country.

history

1869 in the south of the former Basutoland the place Old Hoek [ Hoek ( Afrikaans ): Corner] founded. The objectives were the establishment of a headquarters for the British administrative authority and the control of the Basotho over the Phuthi . After the headquarters was destroyed during the Gun War 1880–1881, Mohale's Hoek was founded in 1884 five kilometers south. Mohale was the name of a younger brother of Moshoeshoe I who founded Old Hoek. As a result, many phuthi settled in the Quthing district .

Mohale's Hoek has been the Roman Catholic bishopric of the Mohale's Hoek diocese since 1977 .

Economy and Transport

Today Mohale's Hoek is an important place in southern Lesotho. In addition to administrative facilities and numerous retail stores, there are schools and a hospital. Buses and shared taxis run from the bus station in many directions, especially along Main South, the most important road in southern Lesotho.

Sports

The Majantja FC ( Sesotho for "Dog Eaters FC") from Mohales's Hoek played long in the Lesotho Premier League and won two championships. In 2017 the club played again in the Lesotho Premier League.
