Lahyani was born in the Moroccan village of Tafraoute , but his family moved to Uppsala in Sweden a year after he was born . He worked as a cook in his family's restaurant, but at the same time began to work as a tennis referee. He had his first international assignment as a linesman in the Davis Cup . At the beginning of 1990 he received first the silver and then the gold referee badge, so that from then on he was active on the ATP Tour and in Grand Slam tournaments .

He was the referee of the game between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut in the first round of Wimbledon 2010 . The game ended 6: 4, 3: 6, 6: 7 (7: 9), 7: 6 (7: 3) and 70:68 for Isner, broke several records and made headlines as the "longest match in the world" . Lahyani, Isner and Mahut were honored with awards from the organizers.

In 2018 he headed a game at the US Open , during which he encouraged Nick Kyrgios during the game against Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the second round, which with the score of 4: 6 and 0: 3 still made it 4: 6, 7: 6 (8: 6), 6: 3 and 6: 0 led to victory. He was then temporarily suspended for violation of impartiality, but then continued to serve as a referee.

Lahyani enjoys a high status on the ATP Tour. Mats Wilander calls him “ Roger Federer the referee”.
