Mohni (German and Swedish Ekholm ) is an island in the Baltic Sea off the north coast of Estonia in the Gulf of Finland . Administratively it belongs to the Kuusalu community .
The name probably comes from Gotland monks who settled on the island in the Middle Ages . Later the island was a popular destination for fishermen and alcohol smugglers to Scandinavia . At the beginning of the 19th century, a 27.4 m high lighthouse was built, which was renovated in 1871.
The area of Mohni is 63 hectares . About half of the island is forested. It is a destination for tourists. From the art museum in Viinistu, 4 km away, there is irregular shipping. Today Mohni is part of the Lahemaa National Park .
The Estonian poet Kristiina Ehin lived and worked on Mohni at times .
