Mohring effect

The Mohring effect describes a connection in public transport that Herbert Mohring , a transport scientist at the University of Minnesota , first described in an essay in 1972.

Mohring describes the following relationship between increased demand and reduced costs in public transport: If demand increases due to increasing numbers of passengers and the frequency of the vehicles (bus, train, but also aircraft) increases, the waiting time of passengers decreases at the same time. As a result, the costs and waiting times for passengers decrease with increasing demand.

However, when the capacity limit is reached, the benefits can be offset by congestion.
