The Mokscha (historically Mokscha-Mordvinen ) are a people in Russia , mainly in the Republic of Mordovia . You belong to the Volga Finns .

The moksha are considered by some ethnologists to be the smaller of the two main groups of the Mordvins (the larger are the Ersja ), while others assume that they are two different peoples. Accordingly, the Mokshan language is either a dialect of Mordovian , or a separate language.

In the Russian census of 2002, 49,624 people gave Mokscha as their nationality, that is 5.9% of the Mordvins (with 10.0% Ersja and 84.1% who did not specify according to these groups). 96% of the people who explicitly stated moksha as their nationality live in the Republic of Mordovia; of all Mordvins put together, only 34% live in Mordovia. 5.3% of the inhabitants of Mordovia belong to the Mokscha (8.9% Ersja, 17.7% Mordwinen unspecified).

Around 99% of both the Mokscha and the Mordvins speak Russian . Almost 73% of all Mordvins in Russia speak one of the Mordovian dialects (or languages), in Mordovia itself almost 85%.
