Moncton and Buctouche Railway

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Moncton and Buctouche Railway was a railway company in the Canadian province of New Brunswick . It was first founded in 1883 as the Buctouche and Moncton Railway and built a 48.18 kilometer long railway line that branched off from the Intercolonial Railway in Buctouche Junction east of Moncton and went north to Buctouche . The line was opened on September 1, 1887 and extended into Moncton the following year, where it crossed the Intercolonial in Buctouche Junction. The railway struggled with economic problems and was foreclosed at the end of 1894.

The Moncton and Buctouche Railway acquired the railway and continued to operate it from December 1895 until it was bought by the Canadian government on August 10, 1914 and incorporated into the Canadian Government Railways (CGR), the state rail company of Canada. In the same year, the Buctouche Junction was abandoned and the section to Moncton was sold to a local tram company, which continued to use the route. The Canadian National Railway , which emerged from the CGR in 1918, closed the line to Buctouche on January 1, 1965, with the exception of a short stretch to connect an industrial area.
