The Moni Agiou Nikolaou Sintzas ( Greek Μονή Αγίου Νικολάου Σίντζας Moní Agíou Nikoláou Síntzas ; "Monastery of St. Nicholas near the fig tree") is a monastery above the town of Leonidi in the Peloponnese in Greece . It is located in a cave on the steep slope of a 764 meter high mountain. Above the cave there was once a large fig tree in tsakonischen dialect of the locals syntza called from which the toponyme part of the name of the monastery is derived.

history

The monastery was first mentioned in 1622. In 1810 it was converted into a women's abbey. Around 1920 a concrete driveway was built from Leonidio to the monastery.

In October 2017 only one nun lived there. The nun spends the winter in the monastery of Agios Georgios.

Location and access

The monastery is located in the valley, a little outside of Leonidio, next to the road that leads to the monastery of Agios Nikolaos Sintza. There is a parking lot below the monastery, behind which there is a high concrete retaining wall. Past the monastery, a narrow, winding footpath with paving made of coarse stones leads to a gorge and on to the top of the mountain. The path is secured against slipping with dry stone walls made of large stone formats. It is a very old connection to the mountain height, which leads to villages in the mountains. This path is much older than the monastery and could have been from Byzantine times. The path joins a road below the mountain "Spartolaka", which leads to the mountain village of Tsitalia.
