Monika Unkel is a German Japanologist .

Life

She studied from 1983 to 1989 at the University of Bonn (translation: Japanese / Turkish) and from 1991 to 1993 at Waseda University (Japan scholarship, DAAD ). After receiving his doctorate in 1998 at the University of Duisburg with a dissertation on the subject of Japanese vocabulary work. A model for improving the learning and teaching of Japanese vocabulary she was from 1989 to 1991 and since 1993 various scientific activities at the Free University of Berlin (teaching materials Japanese), the University of Duisburg (Modern Japan), the University of Marburg (Japan Center) and of the University of Bonn (Seminar for Oriental Languages). From 2004 to 2012 she headed the LSI-Japonicum in Bochum . From 2012 to 2018 she taught as a junior professor at the University of Cologne . After a successful final evaluation since July 1, 2018, she has been a university professor for Japanese foreign language didactics . From 2012 to 2017 she was a member of the advisory board of 日本語 教育 学会 (The Society for Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language) (representative for Europe, the Middle East and Africa).

Her main research interests are Japanese as a foreign language, foreign language didactics, intercultural communication and inclusion.
