The Royal Canadian Mint ( English , RCM ) or because of the state-owned Canadian bilingualism equally well Monnaie royale canadienne ( French , MRC ); German Royal Canadian Mint ; is the Canadian mint founded on January 2, 1908 and based in Ottawa . Current President ( Master of the Mint ) and CEO is Sandra Hanington , who replaced Ian Bennett.
As a Crown Corporation under the supervision of the Minister of Finance , it exclusively manufactures the Canadian dollar ( circulation coins ) and coins of 74 foreign currencies . Commemorative coins as well as silver and gold coins, including the well-known Maple Leaf coins, are also produced. The company says it produces 15 million coins every working day. The Canadian dollar coins are issued in the name and on behalf of the Canadian monarch.
Today it only maintains one mint for currency coins, which is located in Winnipeg ( ) and has an area of 14,864 m². It was built in 1975.
history
The Mint was founded in 1908 as a branch of the British Royal Mint . In 1931 it came under the control of the Canadian Treasury. Since 1969 it has been self-employed as Crown Corporation. In 1971 the Winnipeg location was finally opened.
Since 1979 the seat of the Royal Canadian Mint has had the status of a National Historic Site .
