The Royal Canadian Mint ( French Monnaie Royale Canadienne ) building in Ottawa is the seat of the mint of the same name and an important cultural monument of the Canadian capital. The entire complex (including the ancillary buildings) has been classified as a national historical site since 1979 , and the building itself has been recognized as a nationally significant architectural monument since 1984 .

Location and description

It is located on Sussex Drive , near the National Gallery of Art , in the Lowertown neighborhood of Old Ottawa. There is a hospital directly opposite . The back faces the Ottawa River .

The building has two floors in the Tudor Revival style . The facade is made of bricked limestone . The area is separated from the street by a cast iron fence with a gatehouse .

history

The original building was constructed between 1905 and 1908 and opened in January 1908 as a branch of the British Royal Mint . The architect was David Ewart . A year later, an annex for refining gold was added, which was completed in 1911. Further changes were made in 1916 and 1951.

In 1985 the old building was finally torn down down to the facade and rebuilt in order to do justice to the changed function. Today no circulation coins are minted in Ottawa , only collector and bullion coins . The building also serves as the company's administrative headquarters, coin museum and official sales point for collector and bullion coins.
