The page assembly determines the appearance of the printed pages. It is made up of the break of the text lines ( mettage ) and the integration of images and graphic elements. The lead type required a mechanical assembly of the different page elements such as letters , dummy material and clichés . When setting photos , it was necessary to arrange photographically reproduced two-dimensional elements on a mounting sheet. Desktop publishing , which is common today, enables a layout on the monitor.

The sheet assembly determines the arrangement of the printed pages or copies on a printing material . This includes, for example, the collective form for different print templates and the imposition of multi-page templates. The aim is to achieve maximum benefit, i.e. optimum use of the printing material with as little waste as possible through clever arrangement.
