Archaeological remains of settlements of the Iron Age Cantabrians , the Romans and the Visigoths have been found here. Some researchers believe they are the remains of the Cantabrian city of Vellica, which dates back to around 25 BC. Was the site of a battle against the Romans under Emperor Augustus (see Cantabrian War ). It became an important site known as Castro Cántabro de Monte Cildá in Roman times.
