The Monte Laturce is a 1039  m high mountain and the highest point of the Peñas de Clavijo in the Spanish region of La Rioja .

The Monte Laturce is located in the municipality of Clavijo around 16 km south of the provincial capital Logroño ; the town of Clavijo is less than 1 km away.

history

Monte Laturce used to be a strategic observation point, because the Ebro Valley can be viewed and monitored from its summit . At the top there is a memorial cross that commemorates the Battle of Clavijo in 844. About 15 years later, another battle between Christian and Muslim armies took place on Monte Laturce. On the slope of Monte Laturce at an altitude of around 800 m are the ruins of the Cistercian abbey founded around 950 . The mountain is mentioned in the church history of Logroño through the martyrdom of Bishop Sancho de Funes in 1146.

Flag of Rioja

In May 1979 the new flag of La Rioja was hoisted for the first time after the referendum on Monte Laturce . The flag was finally approved by the Provincial Council in August 1979 and has been an official symbol in the La Rioja Statutes of Autonomy since 1982. The flag shows Monte Laturce in the lower left part.
