Sancho de Funes
Sancho de Funes (* 1116 or 1118 in Funes (Navarra) ; † September 5, 1146 in Clavijo ) was a Benedictine monk and bishop of the diocese of Calahorra in Spain .
Life
Sancho was the first abbot of the Monasterio de Santa María la Real de Nájera and then bishop of the diocese of Calahorra. On August 1, 1137, Bishop Sancho consecrated the church of Santa María de La Piscina , which today is one of the best preserved monuments of Romanesque architecture in the La Rioja region.
In 1140 he was involved as a bishop in a decisive role as an arbitrator in the dispute between the kingdoms of Castile and Navarre. 1146 he died on the mountain Monte Laturce in the municipality Clavijo near Logroño to martyrdom . His relics are kept in the Cathedral of Calahorra . He was succeeded by Rodrigo de Cascante (1146–1190).
Sancho de Funes is celebrated on September 5th each year.
