The Monte Toro (catalan: El Toro ) is 357 meters high, the highest mountain in the Spanish Balearic island of Menorca .
location
Monte Toro is located in the geographical center of the island of Menorca in the municipality of Es Mercadal , around 24 km east of Ciutadella and 24 km northwest of Mahon . From Es Mercadal you can reach the summit car park via a paved serpentine road .
history
The ancient settlers built a watchtower on the summit, and a defense tower was built on the foundation walls in 1558. It offers a panoramic view of the entire island and is now a popular destination. In 1670 a Franciscan convent, Santuario de la Virgen del Toro, including a Gothic-style church , was built on the summit . In 1936 the monastery church was looted and most of it was destroyed. As historians report, the figure of Our Lady Nostra Seyore del Toro , venerated by the Menorcan believers, was recovered and is now in the restored pilgrimage church.
