Montecristi is a city in western Ecuador near the city of Manta . It is located in the province of Manabí and is the capital of the canton of the same name. The city had 46,000 inhabitants in 2010.
Culture and sights
Montecristi is best known for the production of Panama hats . The highest quality hats are therefore also called montecristi superfino . This is where the Constituent Assembly of Ecuador 2007/08 took place in the Ciudad Alfaro Conference Center . This was named in honor of a famous son of the city, Eloy Alfaro (1842-1912), President of Ecuador from 1895 to 1901 and from 1906 to 1911. The largest church in town is the Basílica Nuestra Señora de Monserrate .
