geography

Monterrico is located south of the highlands of Guatemala in the flat coastal plain, which is partly characterized by mangrove swamps and lagoons. A navigable canal was built in the 20th century parallel to the beach up to the state border with El Salvador . In part, it also serves to drain the plains and to gain new agricultural areas.

Monterrico is known for its elongated beaches of black, volcanic ash and is therefore a popular place for weekend getaways for the residents of Guatemala (City) , the country's capital. The place has become attractive for foreign tourists in recent years due to the relaxed atmosphere, the beaches and the surfing opportunities on the beach.

Sea turtles

In the months of August to November four different species of sea turtles come to the beaches there to lay their eggs in the sand. This natural event also attracts tourists who want to experience the hikes. During these months, the local population is busy collecting the turtle eggs and eating them themselves or selling them for consumption. Only a few of the eggs collected are given to the rearing stations set up by nature conservationists.
