Montfitchet Castle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Montfichet's Tower was a fortress in London . King Wilhelm I had it built after the Norman invasion in 1066 to protect the city from attacks by the Vikings and to prevent possible uprisings by the city's residents.

The building was on the western outskirts near Baynard's Castle and was owned by Gilbert de Monfichet of Rouen , a relative of the king who had proven himself in the battle of Hastings . On the orders of King Johann Ohneland , the building was destroyed in 1213. The materials were reused in the construction of Blackfriars Monastery in 1276 .
