Foce Monument

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Foce Monument is one of the most impressive and complete Torrean cult monuments of its kind on the French Mediterranean island of Corsica . It is located near Bicchisano in the canton of Petreto-Bicchisano on the D757, from Argiusta-Moriccio about 1.3 km in the direction of Olivese in a cork oak grove not far from the road. A municipality of the same name, Foce , is a good 20 km further south.

The round building is relatively well preserved and gives a good impression of the construction method, which is clearly linked to Nuragic models in the floor plan . There are still several covered corridors, a main chamber (cella) with two niches (ashes and bones were found in the head niche) and a staircase. The dome has not been preserved. There was a millstone in the entrance ; there is a monolith near the entrance (towards the south) .

Finds

  • In the south-western corridor, shards of various shapes were found in two of the upper archaeological layers, as well as a carved cylindrical pearl without a hole and a slate earring. The floor of the side corridor rises steeply to lie above the western chamber at the end
  • Skeletons (probably from the Roman era) and broken pottery were found in the southeast corridor. Two shards with fluting and two obsidian splinters.
  • In the corridor to the main chamber, two cover plates remained in situ (the inner one has not been available since 1983).
  • In the cella, the black earth based on humus was interspersed with ceramic shards and stones, the dimensions of which correspond to the stones of the wall. Ceramics, ashes, bone fragments, charcoal and jewelry were found here. As with Balestra , no clues were found as to how the cella was roofed. Grosjean suspects a wrong vault .
  • In the western niche of the cella, animal bones were found in two layers.
  • In the head niche (in the north) there were numerous ceramic shards, a polished hematite, and a broken ear pendant. In their little niche lay charcoal and remains of bones.
  • In the east chamber, which also formed the staircase, skeletons were found in three places, as well as obsidian blades, a fragment of a polished stone, a bronze pearl and remains of animal bones
