from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Roman monumental tombs of Elif, Hisar and Hasanoğlu are located in the Araban district of the Turkish province of Gaziantep .

The graves are on the Roman military road that led along the Euphrates from Zeugma to Samosata , on the section between the bridge at Rum Kalesi over the ancient Marsias (today Bozatlı Çay) and the one that crossed the Karasu . They were created at the transition from the second to the third century AD.

All three buildings rest on a more than man-high square base made of colossal stone blocks, which has an entrance to the burial chamber. The monument of Elif ( 37 ° 22 ′ 35 ″  N , 37 ° 52 ′ 54 ″  E ) is built on it up to a height of about ten meters, two opposite sides are interrupted by a door, the other two by a high arch, at the corners there are pillars, which are topped off by acanthus motifs . only vaulted arches remain from the roof. Hisar's tomb, which is also ten meters high ( 37 ° 23 ′ 7 ″  N , 37 ° 54 ′ 55 ″  E ) has no closed walls, but only four corner columns on a protruding platform, which are structured with projections ( risalits ) and also with complete with an acanthus. The sagging pyramid roof rests on it , which in turn is crowned by an acanthus cube . The upper end was originally formed by a column that is now on display in the Gaziantep Museum. Of the mausoleum in Hasanoğlu ( 37 ° 23 ′ 4 ″  N , 37 ° 51 ′ 15 ″  E ), apart from the substructure, only two contiguous sides with square, fluted columns at the corners have been preserved. The walls are broken up by round arches, which stand on columns with acanthus motifs.
