It is separated from this by the Littlecote Channel in the west and Neptune Bay in the southeast. Ugjuk Island is only 300 m west of Moodie Island , directly east of Jackson Island . Ringed seals are common in the waters around Moodie Island .

The island was named in 1945 after Superintendent John Douglas Moodie (1849-1947) of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police , who was governor of the Hudson Bay district in the early 20th century .
