Mooween State Park is a state park in the US state of Connecticut in the municipality of Lebanon on the shores of Red Cedar Lake . The park is accordingly also referred to as Red Cedar Lake State Park .

Surname

Moween is the Algonquian word for brown bear . It was used for the youth camp of the same name. It is said that Edwin Herbert Land received decisive suggestions for the development of the Polarois camera as a youth at one of the camps held there by Cap Girden .

geography

The park extends from the north shore of Red Cedar Lake for 577 acres to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Highway. The Red Cedar Lake drained over a short tributary of the Deep River to Yantic River to the north. While on the south side of the Austin Brook flows east to the Thames River . The highest point rises to 140 m (459 ft) above sea level . The closest state park is Hopemead State Park a few miles south on Gardner Lake .
