Made-to-measure murder

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mord nach Maß ( Murder made to measure , first edition in Swiss spelling, English original title Endless Night ) is the 58th detective novel by Agatha Christie . It first appeared in the UK on October 30, 1967 at the Collins Crime Club and the following year in the US at Dodd, Mead and Company . The Scherz Verlag (Bern / Munich / Vienna) published the German first edition in 1969 in the translation by Jutta Wannenmacher, which is still used today.

Explanation of the title of the novel

The title comes from William Blake's Auguries of Innocence :

Every night and every morn,
Some to misery are born,
Every morn and every night,
Some are born to sweet delight.
Some are born to sweet delight,
Some are born to endless night.

action

Ambitious young man and storyteller, Michael Rogers falls in love with the wealthy American heiress Fenella Guteman (Ellie) at first sight the first time he sees her on the property he plans to buy. The country is called "Gipsy's Acre" by the locals. It is beautifully located with a view over the sea and a dark fir forest. He can quickly win Ellie's heart and, with her money, Gipsy's Acre too. Despite warnings that a curse is looming over the country, the young couple take up residence there and tragedy looms. Ellie dies after an accident. In the end, after a rapid twist, Michael turns out to be the killer - a game that Christie played with the reader in her famous novel Alibi .

Film adaptations

"Murder made to measure" (1972)

The novel was made into a film in 1972 with Hayley Mills , Britt Ekland , Per Oscarsson , Hywel Bennett and George Sanders (who died of suicide before the film was released). Christie is reported to have had strong reservations about the sex scenes that were added to liven up the plot.

"Endless Night" (2013)

The novel was filmed as the last film in the remake of all Marple stories in the ITV series Agatha Christie's Marple . Apart from the fact that the book is not a Miss Marple story, the film otherwise follows the template exactly.
