Manx Gold (treasure hunt) was one of the most unusual projects in the author's career. She was asked by Isle of Man politicians to stage a treasure hunt to stimulate tourism on the island. So she wrote a short story that appeared in five installments in the Daily Dispatch in May 1930. The short story contained traces of four tobacco tins, each with a £ 100 voucher - a substantial sum in the 1930s. The island's residents were excluded from the search. To further promote the treasure hunt, a booklet entitled June was printed in Douglas and displayed in hotels, guesthouses and tourist destinations. Although around 250,000 copies of this booklet were printed, only one remains today

The author later used the motif in her novel with Hercule Poirot Reunion with Mrs. Oliver and in a short story with Miss Marple A Strange Joke .
