The Strand Magazine was founded by George Newnes (1851-1910); the first edition appeared in January 1891. The first editor-in-chief was Herbert Greenhough Smith . The magazine published a mixture of short stories, articles on nature, technology and contemporary history, as well as short reports on celebrities and curiosities. The great success of Strand Magazine was also due to the fact that it was one of the first modern magazines , as new printing techniques made it possible to reproduce photos at the end of the 19th century. At least one photo or graphic was printed on each page, often several.

One issue of Strand Magazine was six pence. The booklet was 23.5 by 16 cm, and one issue was about 120 pages. A total of 711 issues appeared. Due to paper rationing during the Second World War , the original output format had to be reduced. In 1950, rising costs and declining circulation numbers led to unsolvable financing problems and meant the end of the magazine. After the last issue, which appeared in March 1950, the Strand Magazine went into Men Only magazine .
