Bateman at Work (1931)

Henry Mayo Bateman with the stage name HM Bateman (born February 15, 1887 in Sutton Forest , New South Wales in what is now Australia , † February 11, 1970 in Gozo , Malta ) was a British draftsman , caricaturist and cartoonist .

Life

Bateman's parents found no pleasure in the uncivilized Fifth Continent and returned to London shortly after he was born . In 1901, an exhibition on art in black and white in London's Victoria and Albert Museum encouraged the young draftsman to follow his inclinations. However, after his father's long resistance to studying art, he financed the 16-year-old to attend the Westminster School of Art . His performance was good, so after graduating there he was able to study at London's Goldsmiths Institute . During the years of his studies he received his first paid assignments. In later years he fought doggedly with the tax office over his income tax payments.

Bateman was married and both of the couple's daughters became artists. He spent the last years of his life on the Maltese island of Gozo. His subjects as a cartoonist included behavior and reactions from the British upper class.
