Moringue

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Moringue (also called Batay Kréol ) is a combination of martial arts and dance practiced by the peoples of the Indian Ocean . It was developed by slaves on Reunion Island .

Mainly Réunion , Mayotte and Madagascar are familiar with this type of fight. The fighting style is very similar to that of Brazilian Capoeira .

The fight dance has its roots in the 18th century, when mass slavery began with the abduction of black Africans for sugar cane cultivation . During the French colonial era , slaves were forbidden from fighting each other, which is why they developed Moringue to mask the fighting as a tribal dance in the eyes of the whites. The word is derived from the Malagasy word moraingy , which means "boxing match". The moraingy is the rhythm of percussion instruments practiced during competition or training.

Moringue has been rediscovered on Réunion by the Creole youth in recent years.
