Mauro guardians

The Morlakia region in the 17th century

The Mauro Wallachians (also Maurowlachen , Morlaken , Mavrowlachen , Italian also Morlacchi ) are a Romance ethnic group that lived in the coastal areas of Bosnia , Croatia and Montenegro . Most of the Morlaks were assimilated by the surrounding Slavs during the Middle Ages. Only the Istrian Romanians remained .

Even today some of the Croatians and Serbs of Bosnia are referred to as Wlachen ( Serbo-Croatian Vlaje , Vlasi ), but today this term is primarily used as a national abuse to discredit the respective ethnic group, as this term also means "shepherd" in some Balkan regions.
