Morohashi Tetsuji
Morohashi Tetsuji ( Japanese 諸 橋 轍 次 ; born June 4, 1883 in Morimachi, Minamikambara-gun , today: Sanjō ; † December 8, 1982 ) was an important Japanese sinologist, philosopher, scholar and lexicographer.
Live and act
Morohashi Tetsuji studied Japanese and Chinese at the "Higher Teacher Training Institute" (東京 高等 師範学校, Tōkyō kōtō shihan gakkō) and graduated there in 1908. He then attended the graduate department of the same school until 1910. He then taught at his school until 1945. He taught at the Tokyo School of Humanities and Natural Sciences (later Tokyo University of Education ), the Daitō-Bunka University and the Tsuru School of Humanities , their rector he was too. He also looked after the Seikadō Bunko book collection .
Morohashi's main research interests were the Japanese language and Sinology . He is best known as the editor of the 13-volume Dai Kanwa jiten ( 大漢 和 辞典 , dt. "Large Sino-Japanese Dictionary"), which he was able to complete after 15 years of work despite losing his data during the bombing of Tōkyō in the Pacific War in 1960 . This work is considered to be the most extensive and accurate lexicon on Chinese writing.
The Morohashi Tetsuji Museum ( 諸 橋 轍 次 記念 館 ) is located in his hometown of Sanjō and is called Kangaku no Sato ( 漢学 の 里 , dt. "Home of the Chinese customer").
Morohashi was awarded the Asahi Prize in 1943 and the Order of Culture in 1965.
