The Morphy mate is a mate combination named after the chess player Paul Morphy .
It can generally come about in two ways. In the position shown either by the victim on f6 (or f3). After this move, the g-file is open. Thereafter, the tower is chess king cornered h8 (h2) and the runner stymied Lxf6 + (f3). Or the introduction of mate with Rxg7 + (g2). This only applies if the diagonal a1 – h8 (a8 – h1) is not adjusted.
