Three graces
detail

A mosaic of the three Graces (Turkish Üç Güzeller) is located in a Roman bathhouse , today called Narlıkuyu Mozaik Müzesi , in the Turkish town of Narlıkuyu , west of Kızkalesi , the ancient Korykos , 25 km east of Silifke on the Turkish south coast.

Only the floor mosaic of the bath house from the last quarter of the fourth century, which was equipped with clines and bathing basins, is preserved today. It shows the three unclothed graces Aglaia , Euphrosyne and Thalia embracing each other, surrounded by pigeons. An inscription prophesies that whoever drinks this water becomes wise, whoever is ugly becomes beautiful . Furthermore, in the inscription Poimenios .., the beloved companion of the emperor, who also administered the Holy Isles honestly and well, .. is named as the builder of the baths and discoverer of the spring. Poimenios was probably a friend of the Eastern Roman emperor Arcadius and his brother Honorius and served as governor of today's Prince Islands in the Marmara Sea . The source was probably connected to the underground fresh water resources of the nearby Koryk caves .
