The newly built modernist mosque of Fier

The Mosque of Fier ( Albanian  Xhamia e Fierit ) is a mosque built in 2005 in the immediate vicinity of the central square of the central Albanian city of Fier . It was built with donations and aid from Saudi Arabia . In the city there is a historical mosque from Ottoman times.

The Muslim house of worship is one of the largest mosques in the country. After almost all churches in the city had been destroyed under dictator Enver Hoxha in the People's Socialist Republic of Albania , the construction of a new Islamic church proved necessary.

The mosque in Fier ran into financial difficulties in 2013, which is why they were forced to build over the park in front of the building with kiosks and small shops. The mosque wanted to raise capital through rental income - at the same time environmentalists criticized the planned Namazgâh mosque in the capital Tirana , where a park was also being built.
