The Scottish Football League Second Division was played in 1988/89 for the 14th time after the introduction of the Premier Division as the third highest Scottish league . It was also the fourteenth host the third-highest football -Spielklasse the gentlemen in Scotland under the name of Second Division . In the 1988/89 season, 14 clubs competed against each other in a total of 39 match days. Each team played three times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship won the Albion Rovers , which also secured participation in the 1989/90 First Division season . In addition to the rovers , the runner-up Alloa Athletic also rose. The top scorer with 23 goals was Alloa Athletic's Charlie Lytwyn .
