The Mossberg 500 is a series of forend repeater shotguns made by the US gun manufacturer OF Mossberg & Sons .

design

Mossberg 590 (police / military version)

The weapons in the Mossberg 500 series are repeating shotguns . After each shot, the shooter has to eject the empty cartridge case to the right by pulling back the movable fore-end and then feed a new cartridge from the barrel magazine under the barrel by pushing it forward . The weapon can be loaded with various types of ammunition (shotgun bullets, shot, tear gas, rubber ammunition, etc.), and mixed magazine fillings are also possible. The weapon is unloaded when necessary by repeating it.

history

Soldier with Mossberg 590

Originally developed as a pure hunting shotgun, the Mossberg 500 series turned out to be a very versatile weapon. It was the only shotgun to meet the requirements of the US Army and is also used on a larger scale by police and special forces. She was also given the nickname "Persuader", which means something like "convince". Although the M1014 was to be introduced into the US Army in the meantime , many units are still using the Mossberg 590, and around 20,000 units have been ordered.

variants

There are several variants of the weapon. The most common:

  • Mossberg 500 : wooden stock, 5 cartridges in the magazine
  • Mossberg 590 : plastic stock, 8 + 1 cartridges in the magazine, used by police and military units
  • Bantam : wooden stock, hunting shotgun with 700 mm barrel
  • Mossberg 505 : Reduced version of the Bantam introduced in 2005
  • Mossberg 535 : like Mossberg 500, but with a larger magazine chamber

Some of these variants are available in different versions with a wooden or plastic shaft, as well as with a high-gloss burnished, matt or protected surface finish with a camouflage coating. There is also the Mariner version, which is provided with an extremely corrosion-resistant nickel-Teflon coating called Marinecote .

Maverick 88

The forearm bolt action shotgun from the subsidiary Maverick is a simplified version of the Mossberg 500 (black plastic stock, cylinder choke, safety in the trigger guard). The accessories are compatible with those of the Mossberg 500. There are two basic models of the Maverick 88. The 88 Field for predominant use on the hunt with 71 cm long barrel with ventilated rail and a magazine capacity of five cartridges. Depending on the version, the 88 Security has six or eight shots and a 51 cm long barrel. Both shotgun models are designed for the 12/76 magnum caliber.

In Germany, the Maverick 88 is offered in four versions (as of August 2007):

  • with a 46 cm barrel and cylinder choke as a short version
  • with 51 cm barrel and cylinder choke as standard version
  • with 61 cm barrel and cylinder choke and rifle sights (rear and front sight) as a slug version
  • with 71 cm barrel and half choke as a hunting version

Pulled exchangeable barrels are available for both the Maverick 88 and the Mossberg 500. The use of shotgun barrel projectiles is contraindicated under international war law, depending on the material of the projectile. The use of rifled barrels is technically not necessary for shotgun barrel projectiles, as these are now usually stored in a sabot and the projectile is not set in rotation.
