Ludwig Lindenschmit the Younger (born March 4, 1850 in Mainz , † July 20, 1922 there ) was a German prehistoric , museum director and painter . He was the son of the Mainz prehistorian, painter and museum founder Ludwig Lindenschmit the Elder .

Life

Lindenschmit worked for the Roman-Germanic Central Museum in Mainz, which his father co-founded. From 1893 to 1901 Lindenschmit the Younger was director ( conservator ) there and from 1902 to 1912 the second director.

Lindenschmit was editor of the 4th volume of the handbook antiquities of our pagan prehistory (Mainz, Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum), the first three volumes of which his father had edited, as well as the commemorative publication to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Roman-Germanic Central Museum in Mainz (Mainz 1902) .

In connection with the first significant Paleolithic (Palaeolithic) small works of art in Central Europe, Lindenschmit the Younger has made a name for himself alongside his father. So he exposed two forgeries of Ice Age art, which his father published in an important article (1876). The forgeries, the drawings of a bear and a seated fox, came from the Kesslerloch near Thayngen (tinkerers are said to have temporarily found shelter here) in the Swiss canton of Schaffhausen near the German border.
