Mossèn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mossèn , Mossén , Mosén , or Mossen ( Catalan ) was the respectful form of address for knights in late medieval Aragón , Catalonia and Valencia . The salutation was usually put in front of the title of Magnificent (cat. Magnífic) or Honorable (Honorable). Initially, the address was reserved exclusively for knights. Over time, however, honorary citizens and other high-ranking people were also permitted by decree of the mayor to be addressed as "Mossèn". Doctors and lawyers, who were always addressed as "failure", were still excluded from that rule. From the 16th century onwards, influential traders and merchants were allowed to put the title in front of their own name.

In today's Spain , the address is only widespread among priests .
