The Motorlet M-701 was a jet engine developed and manufactured in Czechoslovakia . It was used to propel the Aero L-29 Delfín jet trainer ; between 1961 and 1989, 9020 engines of this type were produced.

development

In 1955, the Czechoslovak engine manufacturer Motorlet began work on developing a new jet engine. The aim was to equip the Aero L-29 Delfín training jet aircraft designed by aircraft manufacturer Aero , which was based on a tender for a jet-powered training aircraft for the air forces of the Warsaw Pact member states . The result was the first jet engine developed in Czechoslovakia under the name Motorlet M-701. Motorlet had previously been able to gain experience in manufacturing the Soviet Klimow WK-1 jet engine under license .

The M-701 was a single-shaft turbojet engine with a single-stage radial compressor. The compressed air was fed to seven tubular combustion chambers, which were followed by a single-stage axial turbine with 61 blades.

The engine first ran in 1958 and was used in the first prototype of the L-29 in 1960. This machine had already been flown with an Armstrong Siddeley Viper the year before. The L-29 emerged as the winner in the tender and was ordered in large numbers; Series production of the M-701 engine began in 1961 at Motorlet in Jinonice near Prague . When the production of the engine was stopped in 1989, the number of copies produced amounted to 9020 pieces.
