The Motta del Cornio Nuovo is a small island in the central lagoon of Venice not far from the Ottagono San Pietro . It has an area of 604 m² and is not far from the Canale dei Petroli, a busy canal that connects the passage of Malamocco with the ports of Mestre and Marghera .
In addition to the well-known Murazzi , massive fortifications on the edge of the lagoon, Venice also built several octagonal islands to protect the canals (Ottagoni), as well as other fortresses. This also included Motte , in the special case of the lagoon, on slightly elevated islands, little fortified houses, which represented the simplest form of fortress construction. They should control the canals adjacent to them in conjunction with other island fortresses.
