Motuarohia Island (also Roberton Island ) is an island in the Bay of Islands in the Northland region on the North Island of New Zealand . It extends over two kilometers from east to west, is up to 670 meters wide and has an area of 83 hectares .
She is best known for the murder of five people on the island on November 20, 1841 by Wiremu Kingi Maketu . Maketu was subsequently sentenced to death and hanged. This was one of the events that led to the Flagstaff War a few years later .
