Motul de Carrillo Puerto , officially short Motul until 1933 , is a small town in the Mexican state of Yucatán , about 44 km east of Mérida . According to the 2010 census, the population is 23,240. Motul de Carrillo Puerto is the administrative seat of the Municipio Motul .
history
According to Maya tradition, Motul was founded in the 11th century by the Maya priest Zac Mutul. The city was the princely family of bad luck reigns. After the collapse of the central Mayan rule in Mayapán in the 1440s, the Pech ruled the regional kingdom of Cehpech with the capital Motul.
After the Spanish conquest in 1538, the conquistador Francisco de Montejo made Motul a Spanish colonial city. The Franciscan monastery with culturally significant frescos dates from the colonial era .
Motul received city rights on February 22, 1872 .
The future revolutionary and governor of Yucatán, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, was born in Motul (murdered in 1924). In his honor, the city was officially given the expanded name of Motul de Carrillo Puerto in 1933 .
