The Tyrrhenian Sea with the Marsili volcano

The Marsili is the largest underwater volcano in Europe. It is located in the southern part of the Tyrrhenian Sea north of the Italian island of Sicily . The volcanic massif extends over an area of about 2000 km². The base of the volcano is about 3000 m and the peak about 500 m below the surface of the water.

The volcano was discovered in the 1920s and named after the Italian scientist Luigi Ferdinando Marsili .

If the volcano erupts or if there is a landslide on its flanks, tsunamis can be expected. It is therefore constantly monitored with the help of seismographs and magnetometers .
