Mount Sorell

The Mount Sorell is a mountain in the west of the Australian state of Tasmania . It is the most south-westerly peak of the West Coast Range and was named after William Sorell (1775–1848), the British soldier and third lieutenant governor of Van Diemens Land .

Its eastern flank dominates the valley of the Clark River , which separates it from Mount Darwin .

Due to its location, its appearance and its dominance over Macquarie Harbor just northeast of Sarah Island , the mountain received its name very early and its barrier effect certainly drove away any thought of escape from the prisoners on the island. Some legends from the time of the prison island say that iron shackles and other things were found in the search for escaped prisoners on the slopes of Mount Sorell.

In contrast to all other mountains in the West Coast Range, no mines, access roads or other manifestations of human civilization were built on Mount Sorell.

The promontory in the outer part of Hells Gates at the entrance to Macquarie Harbor is called Cape Sorell .
