The Mount Darwin is a mountain in the west of the Australian state of Tasmania . It is located at the southern end of the West Coast Range and was named after Charles Darwin .
location
On the eastern flank of the mountain is the ghost town of Darwin . The Andrew River rises on its northern slopes. North of Mount Darwin is Mount Jukes , while Mount Sorell adjoins it to the west.
Mining
On Mount Darwin there are long-abandoned short tunnels and shallow depressions in which gold was previously mined. They belong to the Jukes-Darwin Field .
Access
The mountain has a plateau and old mine roads that lead to some of the older prospecting sites.
In the 1970s, four-wheel drive vehicles could drive to the top of Mount Darwin. The paths also lead over into the valley of the Clark River , which lies between Mount Darwin and Mount Sorell. And some paths were also laid out on the range of hills on the southern flank of Mount Jukes.
