Mouse Guard

Mouse Guard is a comic book series by author / illustrator David Petersen , published in the USA by Archaia Studios Press and in Germany by Cross Cult . The heroes of the series are intelligent mice who live in a medieval world and have to deal with other intelligent animals such as weasels.

The stories in the series take place in a medieval world where mice form their own civilization. They live in villages and small towns and trade with one another, but are also always threatened by larger animals or one another. So Lockhaven, the largest city of mice, tries to seal itself off and has its own watch with the Mouse Guard . This also protects the mice that have to venture into the dangerous world outside the settlements. The first story follows the three guards Lieam, Saxon and Kenzie.

publication

The series has been published as a comic book every two months with interruptions since 2006. The story arcs Fall 1152 ("Autumn 1152"), Winter 1152 and Black Ax ("The Black Ax") each make up three issues, each of which was also published as an anthology. In 2010, the short story Spring 1153 came out for the American Free Comics Day . In 2009 David Petersen started the spin-off project Legends of the Guard , in which other comic artists tell short stories from the Mouse Guard universe. In addition, four sketchbooks were published from 2006 to 2009.

Since April 2008, Cross Cult has been publishing the anthologies in German. So far, autumn 1152 and winter 1152 have been published . The Legends of the Guardians followed in February 2012 . The comic was also translated into French and Portuguese.

Game adaptation

In 2008 Archaia Studios Press released a pen and paper role-playing game based on the comic series.

The second edition was published in 2016, as a hardcover book and as a box with accessories such as dice, character sheets and a map of the territories.

reception

In 2008 Mouse Guard won two Eisner Awards , “Best Publication for Kids” and “Best Graphic Album Reprint”. The Legends of the Guard collection won an Eisner Award in 2011 for “Best Anthology”. The German publication was awarded the Max and Moritz Prize in 2008 in the “Best Comic for Children” category and in 2009 in the “Best US Comic” category for the PENG! Prize nominated.

In 1001 Comics , Helena Baser describes the first part of the series as a "lovingly told" story with "mice drawn naturally in a fairytale-like, detailed style."
