Moy Castle is a ruined castle on the Isle of Mull in the Scottish Hebridean island . It is located in the south of the island on the bay of Loch Buie . The entire complex is classified as a Scheduled Monument . The current castle ruins are an important example of Scottish fortresses from the 15th century and, through archaeological research, could provide an important contribution to the understanding of the social and economic structure in western Scotland between the 15th and 18th centuries.

history

Moy Castle may date back to the 14th century, although most of the ruins that remain today are likely to date back to the early 15th century. The builder of the castle complex , which later played a role in the wars of religion in the 17th century, could have been Hector Reaganach Maclean, 1st Laird of Lochbuie . In the following time Moy Castle acted as ancestral seat of the line of the Clan MacLean von Lochbuie. Various buildings were added around 1700. The building has probably not been inhabited regularly since 1752. In 1773 Samuel Johnson and James Boswell visited Moy Castle. In 1945, Moy Castle appeared in the British film I Know Where I'm Going .
