Mr. Bloe was a British music project from the early 1970s.

prehistory

In 1969 singer Tony Orlando , who had a few hits in the early 60s and later became famous with Dawn , recorded the track Make Believe with the studio project Wind . Band member and songwriter Kenny Laguna wrote the instrumental title Groovin 'with Mr. Bloe for the B-side together with Bo Gentry and Paul Naumann . Make Believe reached number 28 on the US charts.

The single also made it to England, where, however, the B-side met with greater interest. Pianist Zack Laurence (* 1945) re-recorded the title with studio musicians and called the project Mr. Bloe . The harmonica player Harry Pitch (1925–2015), who had already participated in the recordings of pop stars such as Frank Ifield , Cliff Richard and Val Doonican , played the most important part . The piece became a surprise hit and reached number 2 on the UK charts. The super hit In the Summertime by Mungo Jerry alone prevented the leap to the top. The instrumental was also very successful in other countries, in Germany it reached number 7 and in Switzerland number 4.

After that, Mr. Bloe took other titles such as B. Curried Soul , but despite the support of Elton John as a songwriter ( 71-75 New Oxford ), neither other singles nor the album Groovin 'with Mr. Bloe made it to the charts. The front cover and design of the album were done by Alan Aldridge. Laurence stopped the project again in the mid-1970s.

Laurence is also known as a band leader and has made more records with his big band. Harry Pitch played some very successful TV tunes and was also well known as a jazz musician.

Addendum

After the success of Groovin 'with Mr. Bloe in Great Britain, the original was published by Wind in the USA as A-side and again reached number 89 on the US charts. The band name was changed to Cool Heat for this .
