MrSID
Multi Resolution Seamless Image Database ( MrSID ; pronounced Mister Sid ) is a compression format developed by LizardTech and patented in the USA for raster graphics files with the filename extension .sid . It is mainly used in cartography and satellite images. The compression is based on a specially optimized implementation of the discrete wavelet transform . It can compression ratios from 15 to 20: 1 for gray scale images and 30 to 50: 1 for three-channel RGB data at high quality of the images can be achieved. Common image viewers can display them, if necessary after installing a plug-in.
